Question by Millertown: How do I get my dog to stop chewing on rugs?
I have a dog that is past the teething stage. And she keeps chewing on all of my huge area rugs. We have bought her several chew toys (which she does chew on) and even those kong toys that challenge the dog to get at the food (because we were told boredom may be the cause of her chewing), but still she chews on our rugs. I was told that if I catch her doing it —to say ‘No’ and then give her a chew toy so she understands—but she NEVER chews on the rugs when I am watching. I really want to keep my rugs out (we tried putting the rugs away for awhile) because the house is all hardwood floors and is cold in the winter without rugs and I LOVE my rugs. She just ruined a new rug yesterday—she chewed a huge hole in the middle of the rug. She is a good dog otherwise, we bring her to obedience classes and everything. What can I do about my rugs?? PLEASE HELP!!

Rugs – Italcementi

This was taken at the abandoned Italcementi plant, in Trento. Homeless people, immigrants and squatters have made of this place their leaving quarters.

This is a handheld 3 shots HDR combined using qtpfsgui. For the first time, I didn’t use the default HDR-generation profile (profile 1, it is called), but I experimented using all the 6 predefined profiles. What I discovered is that the profiles using a Gamma response curve (which are 2, 4 and 6, if I remember correctly) give much more dramatic results. They also tend to introduce more artefacts, but these can generally be easily corrected.

In this case, I used profile 2 with a fattal tonemapping with alpha=2 and beta=0.85. In gimp, I added one of the original images as a "hard light" layer, and masked it all out except for the window, where I used it to cover some artefacts on the glass and framing.

Hope you like it, I really enjoy the quality of the light on the rugs here.

A cow skin rug made of many pieces of cow hide, with the end result, a very beautiful design. A lot of work was put into making this rug, something that you just don’t see now days. I was told the rug was bought in the 1960s. It’s a large one about 5 feet x 7 feet and in great condition for it’s age. There are spots where there is no lace and spots where I have put in new deer skin lace….you can buy a large roll of deer skin lace for about 25 and finish what I started. Question by _nicole_: How often should I shampoo my rugs?
I just moved and I have beautiful new carpeting. I already make people leave their shoes at the door. I also heard too much shampooing attracts more dirt. How often should I shampoo my rugs?
Thanks all so much for your input. There are no best answers as they all are good. I do keep socks on and will encourage guests to do the same. I will vacuum daily, and give it a good shampooing every year. Thanks all so much!

if you make people remove thier shoes like we did in Hawaii and you vacuum daily and I mean daily no need to shampoo ,the carpet has protection from stains that can be removed in the shampooing process
personally I would not have carpet as it is nasty stuff ,dirt ,allergens etc but if you follow the program you are on it should be fine
removing shoes at the door is ancient Japanese custom

Question by koliobi: How do I attach rugs on top of a carpet? My house is carpeted; my rugs will not stay in place on the carpets.?
I am concerned that using the commonly available tapes will damage the underlying carpet. Specifically, if I used carpet tape to attach my rugs to my carpet, if I decide to remove the rugs and tape will my under carpet not be damaged? I appreciate any ideas. Thanks!

You can buy a rug grip from most mass merchandisers (like Wal-Mart). It is a square or sheet of flexible plastic or rubber that provides traction for the rug on top of the carpet. The more traffic the rug gets, the larger the sheet of grippy stuff should be.

It might look like the thicker foam sheets that you might use in cabinets to cushion dishes — I have used that product to keep small rugs from traveling.

Tape isn’t designed to hold carpet to carpet — you’ll leave sticky stuff all over the carpet, rip out fibers, and ruin the whole thing. Nails down into the floor (through the carpet) aren’t good, either, as they often cause the rug to stretch and finally tear.

Some of my mother’s woven rugs, and a rug class

My mother passed away on October 26. We brought back an old frame from the house, but the picture in it was, unfortunately, ruined. My wife decided to use the frame for a tribute to my mother, and her rug-making.

Mom developed the craft of creating hand-woven rugs from cloth cut from used coats. She exhibited her work in various venues, and taught classes on this craft. There is a photo of such a class as part of this graphic. She made a few hundred of these rugs, in sizes ranging from chair-seat size to nine or more feet in length. Some were round, some were elongated, and she used both a spiral and a spoke method of weaving. She made several hundred of these during her life in Michigan, where she and Dad moved in 1984, We, and other family and friends, have many of them, and she sold some, too.

My wife arranged a number of photos that were taken by one or more friends of my mother. I scanned them, tweaked them with The Gimp and Corel Photo-Paint, lined the scans up, and merged them into one graphic, in Corel Draw, then tweaked the result in Photo-paint. We have had the resulting graphic printed out at 14 by 18 inches, and, we hope, it will eventually be suitably framed.

I inadvertently placed two copies of one rug in the graphic. My wife decided that she liked it that way. She also picked out the border color at the top and bottom, which we used to fill out the needed dimensions.

There are larger sizes of this graphic available, but be warned — this picture’s original size was 14 Megabytes, more or less. Click on the "All Sizes" button just over the picture if you want to see them.

The picture belongs to a set — click on the "Rugs by Martin’s mother . . ." set in the right column, if you want to see a few other, more ordinary photos of her rugs.

I’ll never do anything like this, I’m sure, but I’m glad my mother did, and that my wife decided to create this remembrance.

Question by clean rugs: How do I clean inexpensive area rugs without spending a lot of money?
I have young children and inexpensive area rugs. I plan to move in a year, and I want to keep my rugs until then. But, they’ve been spilled on, peed on, and who knows what else. How can I get them clean without spending more than they’re worth?

Well if they are not to big throw them in the washing machine. if they wont fit in the one at home try the giant ones at the laundromat. then hang them out to dry.

Braided rug made from old towels

I made this rug from the towels that I used to use in this bathroom. The trouble was that they had faded somewhat and were beginning to look dingy. I cut them into two inch strips, sewed the strips together, and then braided them. Then I coiled the long braided snake into the rug you see here and stitched the coils together. It was a slow process, but the results were great. Plus, it always reminds me of my grandmother who made an amazing braided wool rug out of her children’s outgrown clothes.
