What the best (and cheapest) way to ship a large oriental carpet?

Looking for info on rugs safavieh, home dynamix rugs, oriental area rug, gabbeh persian rugs and more?

I wanted to send it freight UPS, but they said it’d be almost 0 to ship! Its about an 8x11ft oriental that weighs about 70 lbs rolled up. Also, do I need to get a box or do you just use plastic? Where can I find one that big to fit a rug in?

I'm redecorating my living room and am confused about picking out pillows for the couch?

The couch is white and there is a wingback chair that has a navy floral pattern on cream and a smaller traditional wingback in sage. I have a map of Cape Cod on the wall, in black and white. I thought of having a nautical theme, for instance seahorse and shell pillows but I don’t know what colors. I guess I should look at a color wheel and maybe I should stick with patterns and floral as the room isn’t really that nautical except for the map. The rug is an oriental, should I match the pillows to this. There is a wooden footstool with a yellow stripe fabric on the top. I just feel nothing really matches and I’m just dealing with odds and ends. I was also thinking of getting a navy slipcover for the couch. I don’t have enough money to hire a decorator, I’m just trying to do this myself. Thanks for any suggestions.

Antique oriental rug history and value?

What’s the best way to learn the history and possible value of a large, 13′ x 26′ oriental rug? A friend is thinking about selling hers, and she wonders how to go about this without getting ripped off by a used car(pet) salesman. The rug was made sometime before 1890, probably.

Also, has anyone ever had a valuable rug cleaned? Could such a rug be ruined if cleaned improperly?

Do formal living rooms with hardwoods have to be covered in an oriental or persian rug to be elegant?

I much prefer modern rugs, but my husband disagrees. He says all elegant formal living rooms have oriental or indian rugs. The modern designs are for casual family rooms only. Help!

We have solid green leather sofas, a piano, and two dark wood end tables. The house is very open. I have warm beach decor in the house- lots of blues, sea shells, etc. The indian rug he wants just doesn’t fit!

Who do Egyptian people in the United States pray to?

A buddy of mine who lives in a town near me, used to work at this pizza place that was owned by Egyptians, where we were eating at the other day. He said when he worked there, at one point during the day, they would put an oriental rug down in the restaurant or something, and have a praying session. I think they pray towards Allah. I know anubis was an Egyptian god, but from a few thousand years ago. That’s who I thought they prayed to, lol. It’s fine by me, but if the Egyptians pray towards Allah, and they are good people, why does Osama follow Allah and terrorist extremist follow Allah, and do bad things? What is the difference between people in a religion who pray towards Allah who are good people and would never commit a terrorist act as opposed to a terrorist extremeist or whatever you refer to Osama Bin Laden’s group of people? I’m just interested in learning more about religions, and just interested in history in general. I know history, just not a lot of religion, and I don’t no if I sound dumb, just want to enlighten my mind. Any information will be helpful.
Chill out people, I’m interested, and do believe there is a God, I’m just interested and want to be educated the right way. Sorry if people are confused by this question. this question was not to degrade any religion.

I hope you understand my question, just curious, and don’t mean anything by it at all.
@ Lady, no, I’m just interested in who they pray to is all, and about their culture and religious beliefs.

Do blind people decorate their homes?

Do blind people decorate the interiors of their homes? This sounds like an insensitive question. but truly, what purpose would pictures on a wall, or an exquisite chandelier, or a stylish oriental rug serve to someone who is concerned more with safety, comfort, touch, etc. Are their homes sparse on the inside with minimum stuff? I ask this because I recently saw a collection of braille magazines, and such a vibrant photo-spread issue of People magazine in braille is just white pages with the bumps which got me thinking about what else blind people couldn’t care less about.

what color wall would go best with brown sofa?

our family room has 2 giant custom made chocolate brown sofas with big rustic metal rivets. In addition there is another brown leather recliner. They sit on an oriental rug that has black, raspberry, mustard and a kind of aqua blue in it. That rug sits on an oatmeal color carpet. The other 2 pieces of furniture in the room are a granite cocktail table with creams and dark grey and a warm pine colored trestle table/sofa table. As I type this it sounds horrible, it is lots of Big statement pieces, The room is very boring looking. Originally I went with a of tuscany goldish wall to go with the mustard in the rug and the brown sofas and warm pine trestle table, with aqua blue pillows, bad choice. Feels lifeless.I am wondering taupe walls? Any help would be appreciated.
wow thanks for all the advice, so maybe I had it all wrong? I had warm toned walls, as I thought if you had warm toned furniture you would stay in that tone?, maybe that’s why it seems drab? It just doesn’t seem "clean" . I need a cool toned wall? I am tending towards the taupe grey but the family room is open to the kitchen and I have lots of stainless steel in there, what I do with the family room walls I will do (shade up or down) in the kitchen so i don’t want a real grey wall with stainless steel.
I kind of like the colors on the restoration hardware site, creams, greys taupes. But have never lived in greyish walls before so?

cost of getting your oriental rug cleaned?

We have a 5×8 oriental rug that needs cleaning.
i’ve looked online and i know it might be hard to get a quote but
does anyone have any experience in this department?
like, how much should it end up costing???
it has a deep and wide pee mark from my basset and a soda "stain" in the opposite corner.
also… i am in the CENTRAL NEW JERSEY area.
if anyone has any prices and places to suggest, i’d totally appreciate it !
i don’t want to go about this myself.. i want a professional to do it.
just want to add…. yes, it’s a silk rug. hand woven.
oh, and the "stains" are not visual. they are soaked in and smelly, except i cleaned them the best i can but want it professionally cleaned, of course

How can I decorate my room bohemian/Indian/hippie style?

So right now my room is really pretty. The way I like it, except my friend just moved out and we had been sharing a room so her beds gone and there’s a big open area. Right now my room has a lot of rich colors and patterns. With drippy tapestries and lights strung across the ceiling. I have a ton of pillows and a queen sized bed. But to the left of my bed there’s about 6 or 7 feet of empty space. I thought having a sort of Indian style tent could be neat but I’m not sure how to do that. The only oriental rug I own is already on use at the foot of my bed which takes up about 1/2 the floor space. Based on that style I just told you about what do you suggest I put in the open space? Thanks! :)

If you could afford interior decorating…?

…what kind of theme would you do in your home? Are there any particular colors, plants, or patterns you would choose? I’d definitely have my home feng shui all the way. I can’t decide if I’d want my home to look Oriental, Middle Eastern, Indian, or French country. It’s hard to decide when you like French doors, Persian rugs, Arabian furniture, and Japanese art. What would you do if you had some interior decorators come refurbish your home?

I used full strength bleach on my oriental rug and it turned it dark yellow is there any way to get that out?

Poem I wrote, what do you think? Criticism is welcome, as always?

A young woman holds her smilin’ babe and
cooes to the wind,
a sailor sits at the stern deck on a massive merchant cruiser,
and reads Rimbaud by flashlight, slowly finding
himself transforming into a twentieth century
surrealist orphan,
his mother sits at home in North Eastern America,
sitting stoidly on faith and worn-down rugs,
knitting by firelight and dreaming of the day
her babe last sucked smiling at her breast,
a maiden of latter-day saints-
finds herself wrapped around the waists of a
thousand men in Mexico-her
husband waits patiently in the scraggly oriental
garden made in their youth and early years
of marriage and martyrdom,
reading the book of Mormon and finding himself
frightened of Utah proper,
an old veteran wounds his knee on native
hunting grounds,
a thousand bones weep in the earth,
angels sing in the form of children,
the pope declares every day a day of Catholic
Doom-
the world spins on her axis and lies imbalanced
by hollow heroin veins and dependency on man,
-le monde est la putain peu disposée de l’homme-
and as it comes to pass so has my mind,
the mind comes to this world
so that it may decay and pass on,
our bodies but a shell of a memory
of clandestine trilling crystal makers, robed and
winged,
the world is made up of burly mad French men,
so that women may swoon at their touch
and pant at the words of their clever poetry,
as they tweak their moustaches
by firelight, and
-les filles du YE sont bonnes
dans le lit, no?-
Paris is no place for lovers, nay,
there are but too many of them,
the world is too industrialized by opium poppies
and in Tangiers they sell kief by the ounce-
picture the mountain-
you wonder why I write of this so fragmentedly,
I do so that it may resemble that of the
fragmentation of the world and her men-
and withdrawals don’t make for the best prose.
Ye bottle is poisoning me-
pourtant je l’aime ainsi.
