Purchased from the well known Portland OR rug dealer Atiyeh (http://www.atiyehbrothers.com/), probably in the 1930′s. A tribal rug, from Turkmenistan. An individual prayer rug with an orienting element (not correctly called a mihrab, a term reserved for large single orienters) that the worshipper points toward Mecca. (My grandfather was probably not aware of this.) Probably natural dyes, the blue probably indigo, the red madder. The slightly greenish-appearing dye, which probably somewhat degrades the fiber, may be iron-mordanted logwood.
