Maimana is the capital of Faryab province in northern Afghanistan, and has a long tradition of making flat woven kilim rugs. These rugs are mainly woven by Uzbeks who are prolific kilim weavers, and have settled in Maimana since the thirteenth century. Mostly woven by Uzbek women, the

80 mm portion of the back of a 500 mm oriental rug that belonged to my grandfather Earnest Alonzo Southwick, Sr. (1875-1939). Purchased from the well known Portland OR rug dealer Atiyeh (http://www.atiyehbrothers.com/), probably in the 1930′s. A tribal rug, from Turkmenistan. An individual prayer rug with an orienting element (not correctly called a mihrab, a term reserved for large single orienters) that the worshipper points toward Mecca. (My grandfather was probably not aware of this.) Probably natural dyes, the blue probably indigo, the red madder. The slightly greenish-appearing dye, which probably somewhat degrades the fiber, may be iron-mordanted logwood.

rugsforthehome.org How to dye an oriental rug 1.Use a laundromat 2.Bleach the rug in cold water 3.If you get the desired shade, or lighten it enough, then immediately dye it.Otherwise, double or triple the bleach, no detergent, and run it again. You may put additional bleach in the compartment where the fabric softener goes, and it will bleach it again on the rinse cycle. To dry it, lay it on a flat surface, turning it occasionally, and avoid direct sunlight, ideally it will be in the shade on a warm, breezy day. If indoors, dry it on an old sheet on a carpet, with a fan pointed at it, again, turning it every hour or two. Done!
